The digital transformation has led to the creation of so-called “insur-tech” start-ups, which provide new kinds of services in the context of insurance. These services can have very different properties. While some focus on sales of insurance policies, others provide consulting, and yet another group of companies runs platforms for risk-sharing among peers as a complementary service to existing insurance offers.

Many, but not all the “insur-techs” are somehow related to incumbent companies in the insurance industry. As this is a very dynamically developing field of innovation, it is very hard to keep track of the different variations which currently exist.

Students are invited to write a thesis in which they study the current state of the art regarding insur-techs. During their work, students will have to perform the following tasks:

  • Perform a systematic search on insur-tech platforms to get a comprehensive picture of the current state of the art
  • Collect data from public sources about them and categorize them according to their offerings, business models etc.
  • Focus on specific cases to gain deeper insight into their relation with incumbent companies and discuss the influence of this relation on the innovation process

In addition to the web search, students are expected to contact several companies directly, perform interviews or collect information in other ways. Students are welcome to set their own research focus in the study and pursue specific research interests.
