The brick-and-mortar retail landscape is rapidly evolving. Retail stores no longer compete only with online shops or other physical shopping environments; they now compete for people’s time. Historically, technological innovations have played a major role in shaping the retail landscape. IT fostered online and multichannel retailing, revolutionized the supply chains and facilitated the communication between customer and retailer. It is also reshaping the competitive brick and mortar retail environment, for instance by transferring more power to customers. Technology will continue to evolve the retail landscape. Remaining relevant in the retail market requires a shift in thinking – one that embraces disruption and innovation.
