The research stream “Digital Innovation” at Wi1 looks in depth at the way digitization allows for, drives or hinders innovation. We are especially interested in intangible innovations, like the innovation of services, systems or social settings and the practices, processes and platforms that enable new forms of value creation in these contexts. Typical questions we try to answer are:

  • How will big-data drive new digital service business-models?
  • How can toolkits support new forms of co-creation and personalization?
  • What kinds of tools and platforms are needed to support innovators in the digital age?

We, thus, strive to provide the knowledge and tools needed for leading innovation and transformation.


The Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE) is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer IIS, Fraunhofer IISB, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), in addition to other non-university research institutes and various industry partners. The center grew out of many years of intense cooperation between the Fraunhofer institutes in Erlangen and FAU, in addition to the unique concentration of electronic systems research activities and industries based in Nuremberg-Erlangen. Research excellence and joint planning have created the foundation for a comprehensive, long-term strategic partnership between Fraunhofer, FAU and the electronics industry.



VeSiKi ist das wissenschaftliche Begleitforschungsprojekt zum BMBF-Förderschwerpunkt "IT-Sicherheit für Kritische Infrastrukturen". Einerseits begleitet es die Verbundprojekte im Förderschwerpunkt und unterstützt den kooperativen Forschungsprozess. Andererseits fördert es die Sichtbarkeit der Aktivitäten und Ergebnisse des Förderschwerpunkts in der Öffentlichkeit und den Transfer in die Praxis. Darüber hinaus leistet VeSiKi eigene, die Arbeiten der anderen Verbünde flankierende, Forschungsbeiträge.

Which influence does high-tech-equipment have on the innovation capability of enterprises? How can the technology and knowledge transfer be designed within a Second-Product-Lifecycle-Strategy? How can the transferred technology and knowledge contribute to fostering innovations in the target enterprises?
